Moon Valley Rustic Furniture

The Sled Shed is a dealer of Moon Valley Rustic Furniture.

Established in 1928, Moon Valley Rustic Furniture manufactures the highest quality log furniture available.  Each piece is hand crafted to high standards in our 72,000 sq. ft. Clarkston, MI production facility.

With hand crafting each piece, we are able to put a priority on quality that is unmatched in the industry.  This means that you will end up with a better, longer lasting piece of furniture.  The wood that we use is grown within the United States, with the white cedar coming from our home state of Michigan and all of our Ponderosa Pine coming from the Western United States.  Also, Moon Valley is the ONLY rustic furniture manufacturer who utilizes hand-cut contoured seating.  This 80-year-old secret technique, known as the "Butt Cut", allows for greater comfort and support while sitting in our classic furniture.  Compare our design to our competitors' and you'll see, and feel, the difference.

By combining quality materials with exceptional workmanship, Moon Valley is able to offer you unique, handcrafted furniture or log railing.  We are also one of the only rustic log furniture companies that offer products stained or varnished.  Our classic varnish not only offers added protection to the wood, but it enhances the look of our products with a unique amber shine.

How do I take care of my furniture?

All varnished outdoor Moon Valley products should be lightly sanded and re-finished after the first season, depending on the extent of exposure to the elements. After that, a once-a-year treatment will do the trick. Moon Valley supplies extra varnish and instructions for care to add to your convenience. If your furniture is unfinished, you can stain it or treat it with a water sealer, if you prefer. It can also be left untreated and will turn a silvery-gray over time.

How is it constructed?
Our picnic tables and lawn furniture are all handcrafted with the finest quality cedar logs and Ponderosa Pine lumber. It is bolted together with heavy-duty hardware and heavily braced using truss-type leg assemblies for greater strength and stability. All edges are rounded and sanded for greater safety and comfort, and seats are contoured with our secret technique in order to meet our goal - overall beauty and comfort of our furniture.

How long will it last?
Cedar is one of the longest lasting woods available for outdoor use. Our sturdy doweled construction combined with weather resistant cedar wood makes our furniture a lasting investment to treasure for a lifetime.

What about cracks in the cedar?
It is natural for cedar, left in log form, to crack or check as it dries. THESE CRACKS DO NOT LESSEN THE STRENGTH OR DURABILITY OF THE FURNITURE. Many times it will add a more rustic look to the piece.

What type of finish is used?

Your Moon Valley furniture is treated with our own special wood varnish or a water-based stain, depending on your product.  This finish has been specially formulated to seal out moisture, protect against mildew, and block out the damaging effects of ultra-violet light. When first applied, the wood will darken to a richer color.  However, the color will lighten over several months depending on the furniture's exposure to sunlight (ultra-violet light). Even though the wood may eventually appear very light, it looks natural and is still protected. When the cedar begins to turn light gray, it is time to re-coat with our penetrating wood sealer and varnish to renew protection and color. If you choose not to finish your furniture, it will weather to a silvery gray and still last many years due to cedar's natural resistance to decay and insect damage. Your Moon Valley picnic table boards are finished with one coat of sealer and two coats of varnish. We have specially formulated our varnish for outdoor use. The varnish finish on the picnic table boards is recommended because it allows for easy clean-up after using the table. The table boards should be re-coated after each season. This will seal any small cracks or knot openings caused by initial weathering. A light sanding, with the grain, using medium grit (100) sandpaper and clean, dry surface are required before new varnish is applied. DO NOT attempt to re-finish your furniture if it is wet. This will result in poor quality, causing the varnish to crack and peel prematurely and may cause the wood to dry rot.

Where does the wood come from?
Moon Valley is proud to purchase its raw wood materials exclusively in the United States. All of our white cedar is from our home state of Michigan. Our Ponderosa pine is from the western U.S. and our aromatic red cedar comes from the southern Ohio and Kentucky areas.
